Check your wiring in the Dizzy system.

I had a problem with a 4x4 van in the 1980's that would start and run great for about 20 minutes and quit and would not start. Wait another 15-20 minutes and the van would start and drive for anothe 5-10 minutes and quit once again.

I thought is was a fuel system problem as the van had 2 tanks and an old fuel pump. I replaced all the crap in the fuel system with NO success.

I took the van to 2 highly recommended and qualified Ford mechanics. They could not figure it out.

One day just sitting there pissed and looking at the engine with the engine cover off I noticed 1 wire BURIED beneath the carb on the driver's side that went to the electronic ignition Ford distributor that had about 1 inch of the wire that was missing the insulation. This was a rather large gauge wire also. The wire insulation had become so brittle due to heat in this area that the insulation had cracked and fallen off the wire. I cut the bad section out of the wire and properly spliced the wire.

Never had a problem again. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

Remember that Volts (V)=Current (Amps) x Resistance (Ohms)

Apparently the heat would get so hot and cause the resistance in that bare section of the wire increase to the point that the current did not flow through the wire and therefore the van engine would quit since the power to the distributor went to zero!

You have an OLD MUSTANG with crappy old Ford wiring. What I thought was a fuel issue ultimately was a wiring issue. Take a GOOD look at your distributor wiring harness!

Ok, took it to my mechanic. He never could get a "communication" with his tester and the computer on the car. He says computer bad. Has a place to send it to and fix this one or I can search for another. Leaning on sending this one in. I'll let you know. Deer season is here so it may be awhile
