  • GSP Restoration Project

Gregg (UNMRKD) and I have been working on a project for the past year or so to get the last Georgia State Patrol Mustang back into running and semi show shape. The car has been sitting outside for years. Gregg is assessing what it needs and Bobby (KARACING) has agreed to assist. We will be looking for members to contribute parts or a few dollars to help get this going. I have pledged funds and parts to assist. Gregg will no doubt be the point man on this as he is in Georgia. As we learn more of the needs, I hope that you can assist in this project. We have a commitment from GSP that when done...the car will be stored inside.

I also want to add that there are some legal issues we will need to iron out with GSP on the donation aspect, so please keep that in mind.

    More to come soon.........................................

I'm taking Cory (the afore mentioned service technition) a nice gas tank and fuel pump in a couple days, probably gonna take the day off and assist in swapping them out and getting her running. Captain Canup has ok'd that, Along with painting the car (need only to submit letter for approval) which is only a formacality. As David mentioned this car will need lots of parts. Almost every external plastic and rubber part has severe sun damage. Amazingly insides are pretty decent although somewhat faded. Greg and I are going to consolidate a list of parts soon that the car will be needing. Im only a little over a hour away from GSP HQ's so I can easily go check on progress Cory makes and go over parts needed more thoroughly. Hopefully the SSP community as a whole can contribute to put this last of its kind ( at least by still being State owned) back to its former glory!

I rode up to Atlanta today with our local post commander to inspect the car and talk with Capt. Canup (head man at the motorpool). As Bobby said, there is a lot to do on this car. We will be working up a list of needed items for your consideration.

There are also paperwork details required and an approval process to go through BEFORE we can start on this project. The GSP has wanted to do this for a long while and the Capt. is authorizing his folks "LIMITED" work authority on their nickel prior to and pending this approval process. I will keep you all posted as the details unfold.

Please understand (if the project is approved) that all parts and labor are "DONATIONS". There is absolutely NO obligation to participate. If you want to -great, if you choose not to - that's fine too. Thanks for your consideration.

Thanks everyone for the offers of support. For right now we are in STAND BY MODE Once we clear the hurdle of legal formalities for approval of the project we will post that result.

In the mean time, if you want to start rummaging through your parts stashes to see what you might be willing to give up that would be great. Bobby and I will be compiling a list of needs in the near future but for now it is a "Stand By" situation.

Again, thanks all for your replies and encouragement.

                  UPDATE

                  Ok guys,

I wanna put a feeler out there for parts donations on GSP's last Mustang. No one is obligated to help or donate. Just some people trying to do a good thing for the GSP. I have a preliminary list of parts that the car really needs, and we have sent in a proposal to make limited repairs initially, (including paint) ahead of completing the full restoration.

                  The initial parts needed are:
                  Quarter glasses
                  Door belt moldings
                  Headlights
And fuel pump/tank assembly (already have)

I know NOS parts are far and few and valued greatly. If NOS parts are not an option, then GOOD used parts will be just as appreciated. The overall project is still for the most part awaiting approval so all I'm looking for is pledges for parts. Also every part used on this car must be included in a letter of donation. That is why we need to see what is available to use so all parts can be included in this letter.

The add'l parts list is as follows:
Steering wheel (non cruise leather wrapped)
                  Dash cluster bezel
                  Ford ovals (front&rear)
                  LX trunk emblem
                  Lesteck alternator

This is not a completed list only a starting point.

If anyone has any NOS parts not listed to donate, we will be glad to add them to the list to go on the car.
If anyone has any of these they would be willing to donate for this project please post up here. If anyone has other parts please post also.

Again this is only a pledge list pending final approval by the GSP.
                  Thanks in advance...

Any questions feel free to PM me or Greg (Unmrkd) as we are doing this as a joint effort for GSP.

Also want to be sure everyone knows this car WILL BE STORED INSIDE upon completion. It's days of baking in the sun are soon over:-) GSP has a indoor location set aside (in fact the restored 37 is already there). There is room also for the other three cars the GSP is eventually going to have restored ( the LTD; Caprice and BMW). So all of our time; effort; hard work and donations will not be in vain.
